FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                          March 1, 2013 Karen Gee, DSNMC:  301-979-1112                                                                                                    Heather Trammell, DSANV:  703-621-7129   DSNMC, DSANV and F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Have Joined Forces To Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day  One voice, one vision…celebrating Down syndrome in the DC metropolitan area. Washington, DC – The Down Syndrome Network of Montgomery County (DSNMC), F.R.I.E.N.D.S. or Family Resource, Information and Education Network for Down Syndrome, and the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia (DSANV) have joined forces to create a Washington area World Down Syndrome Day Task Force that will foster the exchange of information and resources as related to the greater metro Down syndrome community.  One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common genetic condition.  Humans normally have 46 chromosomes in each cell, divided into 23 pairs.  Two copies of chromosome 21, one copy inherited from each parent, form one of these pairs.  Down syndrome occurs when an individual has three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome.  March 21 (commonly referenced as 3-21 to symbolize the third copy of chromosome 21) is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD).  To celebrate, the first project of the Task Force will involve issuing a daily message designed to celebrate, inspire, and increase awareness of Down syndrome.  The inaugural aim of the Task Force is to join in the global celebration of the Down syndrome community.  World Down Syndrome Day is an international awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.   To learn more about WDSD, visit www.worlddownsyndromeday.org. About DSNMC The mission of the Down Syndrome Network of Montgomery County (DSNMC) is to empower and support individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community through education, information, public awareness, and advocacy.
